Sleep Number Mattres

The sleep number mattres isn't what you would normally think of as a mattres. It's really more of an air mattres with a pillow top on it. The inside of the mattres is literally an air mattres. It's surrounded by firm foam on every edge to keep it in place, and then it's inside fabric that looks like a mattres and has a pillow top on top (or just a little padding if not a pillow top). The foam around the edges is only a few inches, so the air mattres takes up most of the space inside the mattres.

For king and queen beds that have two air chamber, they just have two air mattreses inside separated by a thin piece of foam.

Memory Foam Mattres Toppers

If you can't afford a memory foam mattres, then you may still be able to afford a memory foam mattres topper to put on top of your current mattres. This may help if your mattres is just a little uncomfortable, but it won't help if your mattres is just miserable. The topper just lays on top of your mattres so that you kind of have a memory foam pillow top.

There are lots of different kinds of toppers that differ in thickness and in the type of foam they're made from. Some are even a mixture of foam and cotton, more like a real pillow top. Just make sure that whatever you buy has a good return policy in case you don't like it.

Memory Foam Mattreses

Although "tempur pedic" is often used to refer to memory foam mattreses, not all memory foam mattreses are tempur pedic. Tempur Pedic is the name of the company that originally sold them, but now there are countless companies competing.

Not only are there lots of different companies, but there are lots of different kinds of memory foam mattreses. In some cases, the foam itself is different, and others differ in the way they put the foam in the mattres. For example, some mattreses may be one type of foam all the way through, while others may have a firmer foam core with a softer foam top. And of course they can differ in thickness.

So if you're looking for a memory foam mattres, then shop around a lot to see what you like the best. Not everyone has the same tastes.

Temperpedic Mattres

Temperpedic is the original viscoelastic memory foam mattres company. They made memory foam mattreses famous through their infomercials so many years ago. Now there are countless companies selling many different kinds of memory foam mattreses, but Temperpedic is still the most popular. After all, their name is what people use to refer to memory foam mattreses.

The Temperpedic company is run well too. They give you a trial period to decide if you want the mattres or not and you can ship it back to them no questions asked. Usually the shipping costs are pretty reasonable. They want people to be happy with them whether they like the mattreses or not.

Mattres Cover

If you're considering buying a mattres cover, then first ask yourself why. Do you need a mattres cover? Most people don't. If your mattres frequently gets dirty for some reason, then it will make it easier to clean if you can just take off the cover and put it in the wash. But most people won't have that problem or they won't even care if their mattres gets a little dirty because they never see it.

Tempur Pedic Pilow

The original Tempur Pedic swedish pillow is probably the most expensive pillow you'll ever buy. There are more expensive pillows, but not many. So understand that this is not just an ordinary pillow. Most people will probably only spend that much money on a pillow if they have severe neck problems and are desperate. It does provide good support for your neck.

But two things that might not be good about it. First, it's very firm and if you sleep on your side like me sometimes, then it may begin to hurt your ear. Second, it may put your neck in an uncomfortable position if your mattress is really soft. Your body may sink so far down that the firmness of the pillow provides to much support.

Waterbed Mattres

Do you have a waterbed or are you looking to buy one? Once you have a waterbed, you'll never want to move to another apartment or house again. Because moving them is a real inconvenience. When you drain the mattres to move it, don't get lazy. Make sure you drain as much water out of it as possible, even if it's harder to get the last bits out. Even if you leave just a little water in the thing, it can be amazingly heavy to move. So take the time to do it all at once rather than finish draining it after you find out that it's too heavy with that little bit of water in it.

Waterbed Mattreses

A waterbed mattres used to be ... well, a waterbed mattres. But now there are more choices in waterbed mattreses. The waves in a waterbed used to be what defined a waterbed more than anything else. If you didn't like all the motion then you didn't like waterbeds. But now you can get waveless waterbed mattreses. It gives you something of the feel of a waterbed but without all the sea sickness and sloshing around when someone else gets into bed with you. Some of them can be surprisingly firm.

The biggest problem with waterbed mattreses can be moving them. When you move you have to drain the thing, pack it up, which is more difficult than a regular mattres and then fill it up again after you set it up at your new place. And you can't even have waterbeds in some apartments because it may fall through the floor it's so heavy. Waterbeds are good motivators to keep living where you already are.

Twin Mattreses

Twin mattreses are extremely cheap. Even a nice one is pretty affordable. If you need a larger mattres for two people but you can't afford a good one, then here's a wacky idea. Get two nice twins and put them side by side to make one large bed with a small crack in the middle. It's not perfect, but it may be better than a second rate queen mattres. It's possible you can get more mattres for your money this way.

Twin Mattres

A twin mattres is also sometimes called a single. Presumably this is because it's only meant for one person. This is pretty self evident if you see one. Good luck getting more than one person in it. In fact I'm not even sure how sufficient it is for even one person. If you move around much when you sleep, then a twin mattres may not be what you want. It's probably more appropriate for just one kid.

Original Mattres Factory

The Original Mattres Factory has always focused on the fact that their mattreses are hand made in their own factory and are the finest quality. Is that enough? No. There are lots of small mattres manufacturers that make their own mattreses and they all brag about the quality. You have to go to a Mattres Factory store and try their mattreses to compare them to others. Personally, I was impressed when I visited. Their mattreses didn't have the luxurious feel I was looking for. But everyone is different so check them out yourself.

Memory Foam Mattres

Originally, there was just the Tempur Pedic memory foam mattres, but now it seems there are as many different memory foam mattreses available as inner spring mattreses. And one is not necessarily as good as any other. In fact, what's good for you may not be good for someone else since everyone's body is so different.

If you're considering buying a memory foam mattres, then shop around a lot. Get as much information as you can about what kind of foam is in each mattres (there are different kinds of memory foam) and how much and lay on as many as possible to feel the differences. Some will be just one kind of foam in the whole mattres while others will have one kind of foam in the core and another on the top where you lay.

It's gotten pretty complicate, but with all the choices you may be able to find something that's more tailored to your own needs.

Mattreses

Decades ago, there didn't used to be so much difference between mattreses. You didn't have nearly as much choice as you do today.

Now, not only is there a greater variety in box springs and inner spring mattreses, but there are very different kinds of mattreses, like memory foam and latex. Even air mattreses have become much more sophisticated. And as time goes, the variety continues to increase.

It makes you wonder how people have survived all these centuries without debilitating back problems.

Of course, with better mattreses on the market, the prices have gone up considerably. You can find $2000+ mattreses in any store and sometimes you might even find them over $6000 for something really special.

It can be confusing to choose a mattres with all the different options, but personally I'm glad to have the choice.

Mattres Warehouse

There are two different mattres stores called Mattres Warehouse, which may be confusing if you're looking for one of their stores. And it turns out that both of them are in the same part of the US.

One is in Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, and Kentucky. Their website is at mattresswarehouse.com.

The other is in Virgina, West Virginia, Washington D.C., Maryland, and Delaware. 107 stores all together. Their website is at sleephappens.com.

Mattres Sizes

Mattres sizes vary in different parts of the world, but here are the sizes in the US.

Twin - 39" x 75"
Full - 54" x 75"
Queen 60" x 80"
King 76" x 80"

A Twin is not as wide in Europe, but it's wider in Asia.

A Full is less wide in Aisa but longer.

A King is less wide and shorter in both Europe and Asia.

Mattres Size

Mattreses come in four basic sizes, and then there are some variations on some of those sizes. First of all, the order of sizes from smallest to largest is

Twin (also called Single)
Full (also called Double)
Queen
King

There's also the Olympic Queen, which you'll rarely see anywhere. It's a bit wider than a standard Queen. And the California King is longer than a standard King, but not quite as wide for some reason.

The Twin and Full are not only less wide than the others, but they are also shorter (less foot room). However, you can sometimes get an extra long Twin.

Mattres Sales

Mattres sales are nothing but a big hoax. Every mattres store has virtually every mattres on sale every day of the year.

1. It brings in customers.

2. It makes you feel an urgency to buy before the sale is over.

3. It makes you feel like you're getting a good deal.

4. It prevents people from trying to bargain over the price.

If you go into any typical mattres store on any given day, you'll see that they're having a big sale. So that makes the sale price the normal price. Don't believe in mattres sales. Bargain with them and get an even lower price. It works.

Mattres Sale

If you're waiting for a good mattres sale to buy your next mattres, then you're in luck. There's a big mattress sale everyday at every mattres store. It's just a gimmick to bring you into the store. The mattresses aren't really on sale. They just put a sticker on them that makes it look like they are. It's their regular price.

Mattres Reviews

If you're looking for mattres reviews, then depending on what kind of mattreses you're looking at, you may or may not find reviews.

If you're looking for memory foam mattreses, then you're more likely to find good reviews, unless it's an uncommon manufacturer. You'll find plenty of reviews of Tempur Pedic.

If you're looking for reviews of a regular spring mattres, then you may not find them easily. Here's the problem. The mattres manufacturers (Simmons, Sealy, S & F, etc.) may give the exact same mattres different names in different stores. It prevents comparison shopping and keeps consumers in the dark about what they're buying. So, for example, Consumer Reports doesn't even bother trying to make sense of it.

But one of the best places to look for reviews is Epinions. You can go there by clicking the title of this entry above (Mattres Reviews).

Mattres Pads

If your mattres isn't comfortable enough and you either can't or don't want to buy another mattres yet, then you can consider adding a mattres pad onto your existing mattres. And these days, mattres pads offer a lot more than they used to.

It used to just be an egg crate foam pad or a slightly thick cotton cover. And those are the still the cheapest way to go and may work. But now there are lots of memory foam pads as well. And they're a lot more expensive. If you get one, make sure there's a no hassle return policy in case you don't like it. It's possible that your mattres just isn't going to feel good enough with any kind of pad, so you want a satisfaction guarantee from the pad you get.

Mattres Giant

Mattres Giant is a large mattres chain and they have a good selection for you to look at. One thing that's nice is that they sell Tempur Pedic mattreses. Many mattres stores haven't added memory foam mattreses to their inventory yet. So if you're looking for a Tempur Pedic, then Mattres Giant is one place you can go to test them out.

Although the prices in mattres stores are generally negotiable, I doubt they will negotiate on the Tempur Pedic mattreses. I don't think the manufacturer gives them any wiggle room. However, you could try.

Mattres Firm

Mattres Firm is one of the largest mattres chains in the US. You'll find all the major brand mattreses there, and there's at least one in most sizable cities (more than one in large cities). Check 'em out if you're shopping for a mattres, but don't trust the salesmen. See if you can't get a discount on the mattres, the frame, delivery costs, something, but don't pay what they ask.

Mattres Discounters

Mattres Discounters is primarily a chain of mattres stores on the East Coast of the US. However, they also have some stores in California which don't appear to be owned by the same people, perhaps franchises. I think they probably have about 100 stores in the Northeast and about 50 in California. They've been in business since 1978 I think. They have the typical major name brands, but they also sell memory foam mattreses, which you don't see in every mattres store. So this may be a place to try out some off-brand memory foam mattreses and see how they feel.

Cheap mattres

Beware buying cheap mattreses. You want a good price on a good mattres, but you don't want a mattres that's cheap because it's poorly made. You want the price to be cheap, but not the mattres. A cheap mattres will most likely cause you all kinds of back problems down the road. Cheap mattreses are made for guest rooms, if even that. But they won't give you what you need on a nightly basis to get good sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and healthy. They'll make you feel tired and old in the morning.

Mattres

There are two aspects to buying a mattres.

1. Find a mattres that's comfortable.

2. Get the best price on a comfortable mattres.

The first can be very difficult because you often don't know how comfortable a mattres is until you've slept on it for a few months, at least more than a month. So it can be frustrating to try and figure that out from laying on it for 15 minutes or less in the store. The best advice my be just to try as many as possible, lay on them for more than just a couple of minutes, even more than once. And don't go to extremes getting something that's really soft or really firm.

The second can be intimidating, but may be easier to achieve. First of all, shop around. But then when you narrow down which mattreses you like, negotiate with the salesmen. Complain about how expensive they are. Play the salesmen against each other by talking about mattreses you liked at other stores. And don't be afraid to leave the store. You can always come back, but they will often make you a better offer if they think they can keep you there.

King Size Mattreses

There are in fact two different kinds of king size mattreses. There's the regular King, which is sometimes called the Eastern King, and there's the California King.

The California King is longer than a regular King mattres, so it's specifically for taller people. However, the thing that doesn't make sense is that the California King is not as wide as the regular King. What's up? Tall people should also have at least as much width as shorter people. Why do tall people need less lateral space? Doesn't make sense.

I guess the Calfornia King must have been designed for tall skinny people.

King Size Mattres

I would recommend a king size mattres for anyone who sleeps with one other person an at least one animal on the bed. It's worth it just so you don't spend your time sleeping afraid that you'll move and kick someone else. Allow yourself freedom while you sleep. You spend so much time sleeping, it doesn't make sense not to make the most of it.

One nice thing about king size mattreses is that the foundation (or box spring) comes in two pieces. It makes it easier to move.

Futon Mattreses

Futon mattreses now come in a wide variety of qualities and comfort levels. I've seen them from $100 to over $1500. Just for the mattress.

And they aren't just lumpy old cotton mattreses anymore. You can actually get futon mattreses with inner springs. I've even seen one that was latex. So they're really starting to make them much better than the old days.

But it's hard to justify spending so much money on a futon mattres when you could get a real mattres for the same price or less. If you're main concern is with space and you want your sofa and your bed to take up the same space, then I can understand. But otherwise, it seems like getting a regular bed might be better for the money.

Futon Mattres

A futon mattres is rarely a really comfortable thing. Even the decently thick ones that I've slept on haven't been so comfortable. They always seem to be somewhat lumpy. So if you plan to make your futon your bed, then make sure you get the best futon mattres you can buy. You don't want to feel like you're sleeping on a prison mattres after a few months. If it helps, you could even get one of those egg crate foam pads to go on top of it.

Foam Mattreses

Memory foam mattreses are significantly more expensive than the average box spring and mattres, so you need to consider long and hard and do your research before making that committment. If it's at all possible, if you know anyone who has a memory foam mattres, then see if you can't try theirs out. At least lay on it for 15-30 minutes. Maybe you can even take a nap on their bed. :-)

If you do buy one, make sure the company you buy from offers a no hassle return policy and that the shipping costs to return it won't be outrageous. Tempur Pedic has a good return policy, but there are oodles of foam mattres retailers out there now.

Foam Mattres

A foam mattres these days is a viscoelastic memory foam mattres. These are the be all end all for some people, but they don't work for everyone. For some, they actually create more back pain. It's a different kind of feeling than what you're used to sleeping on.

There are also latex mattreses, which aren't the same as memory foam mattreses. But latex seems to be slowly gaining in popularity.

Discount Mattreses

If you're looking for a discount mattres, then what you want is a discount on a good mattres, not a cheap mattres. Make sure you find a mattres that you really like rather than just looking for the cheapest thing you can get. You spend too much time on your mattres to have something that's not comfortable.

Discount Mattres

When you get right down to it, getting a discount on a mattres is very easy to do. You may not realize it, but mattres prices are negotiable, even if they're "on sale". In fact, don't even bother getting excited when you see an insert in the Sunday paper telling you about a big mattres sale, because they're always on sale. They just do that to get people in the store. You should usually be able to get a better price than whatever the "sale price" is.

For starters, you can tell the salesman about another mattres you saw at another store that you liked. That usually gets them to work harder to keep you there.

Dial A Mattres

Dial A Mattres is another name for 1-800-Mattres. They can also be reached at 1-800-824-7777, which doesn't spell anything. They may have a couple other 800 numbers too. I think they were trying to get more mattres related phone numbers a few years ago. And if you want to shop online, then their website is at mattress.com.

Crib Mattreses

Before you buy a crib mattres, it's a good idea to find out what mattreses other parents like and which ones they don't. In other words, get some consumer opinions on any mattreses you're considering, or even get some opinions first to see which ones are most worth considering.

You can find some reviews of different crib mattreses by clicking the title of this post (Crib Mattreses) above.

Crib Mattres

When it's time to buy a mattres for your baby's crib, consult your doctor to find out what kind of mattres is most appropriate. It's possible that certain types of mattreses may contribute to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I don't believe there's any solid evidence, but don't take any chances. Talk with someone who's in the know before you buy.

Best Mattreses

The best mattreses for most people are going to be mattreses that aren't too firm or too soft. While everyone has different needs and preferences, most people will not do well at the extremes. If you want a soft mattres, you'll probably be best off with something that's softer than average, but not super soft.

You want to avoid the mistake of overreacting to your current mattres when you buy a new mattres. If you have a super soft mattres now that's hurting your back, then you're going to want to buy a firm mattres instead. But don't go out and buy the firmest mattres you can find because in a few months you'll be wanting something softer.

Best Mattres

What's the best mattres? There's no such thing. Each person has their own individual needs, and so no mattres, or even brand of mattres, can be the "best". What's best for you will not be good for some people.

One of the most respected brands is Stearns and Foster, and they're also probably the most expensive box springs and mattreses. But a lot of people believe in them.

One of the newer manufacturers that have won a lot of fans is Tempur Pedic. This works great for some people, but it's different than what you're used to, so do your research before buying one. They're expensive.

Then there's the Sleep Number bed. You can adjust the firmness of the mattres anytime you want. This is winning a lot of fans too, but again, very expensive. Another one you would need to give a lot of thought to before buying.

Banner Mattres

Banner Mattres has three stores in the Toledo, Ohio area. They are not only a mattres store, but they are a mattres manufacturer. In fact, they're not even really a mattres store. They sell all kinds of furniture, so they've really become a furniture store that manufactures their own mattreses.

Their web site is very basic, so don't expect to get much info there.

Air Mattreses

Air mattreses are better than sleeping on the ground if you're camping, and they're tolerable for sleeping on if you have company for one or two nights. But they aren't good for more than that if you have any back problems.

And do they come in king size? Because I haven't seen any larger than queen. And for me, queen just isn't good enough for two people, at least not if I want to sleep like I normally do in my real bed. And if there are three cats on it with my and someone else.

:)

Air Mattres

I've owned a few air mattreses and I can definitely recommend one above all the others I've used. I should say that my air mattres shopping has always been for low budget mattreses, not the $100+ air mattreses.

The best one I've found was at Wal Mart and it cost under $40. It was the Wal Mart brand. I can't quite remember what the brand name is, but it may be Great Outdoors or something like that. This wasn't the cheapest mattres they had. Their cheapest is no better than any of the other cheapest mattreses. This one had a raised part on one end, which I suppose was meant to server as a pillow. But the mattres was just much better than the others in the price range in my opinion.

1 800 Mattres

1-800-mattress is the same company as Dial A Mattres. In fact, they may have several 800 numbers registered in their name. I believe they started out as just a phone order company, but now they actually have real stores around the US. Kind of makes their name a bit confusing, but I suppose it doesn't matter because they're obviously pretty successful.

Buying a Mattres

Buying a mattres can be unpleasantly similar to buying a used car (or a new car for that matter). The salesmen are just as slick and it's hard to know what you need. But the number one important thing to know if you're shopping in mattres stores is that the price is negotiable. That's right. Whatever the sticker price is, don't pay that much. Make a fuss about how expensive the beds are and the salesman will give you a deal. It really is that easy.
